Pensacola High School’s

9th-12th Grade Reading Lists

2011 - 2012 School year

Books are categorized as required summer reading (have read before school starts in August); required supplemental text (student will need text for regular class assignments to go along with books issued by school district); required supplemental reading (student will need to have read material but won’t need book in class); or recommended supplemental text (no assignments from text, but teacher feels student will benefit from it).  Students may acquire books from source of their choice; those who find purchasing books a financial burden should consult their teachers or the IB coordinator.  Also, the IBSF has generously purchased copies of the supplements to be available as references in the media center.

 Required supplemental text

Barron’s AP World History (latest edition) by John McCannon

Algebra 1 Honors/Geometry Honors

Required Calculator Restrictions

Students in math classes will need calculators, but some scientific calculators that are widely available perform too many functions.  Students will not be allowed to use calculators that

·         Simplify radicals

·         Rationalize the denominator

A mathematical scientific calculator is preferable to a business scientific calculator; the math version is identifiable by having “sin,” “cos,” “tan,” and “log” buttons.

Students will not be allowed to use graphing calculators until later in the math course sequence.

There are so many calculators in circulation that it is not feasible to produce a list of allowed/disallowed calculators.  If you do not already have one, we recommend Texas Instruments TI-30 or TI-30XA.  If you already own a calculator and wonder if it is appropriate for use in our classes, inquire by emailing jsales@escambia.k12.fl.us.

This important testing opportunity will be administered in the PHS auditorium (Date TBD).  Sophomores are expected to register to take it to gain familiarity, and juniors need to take it to be eligible for National Merit designations and scholarship opportunities.

PROJECT BIG sIBling:  OPPORTUNITY FOR NINTH GRADERS

In an effort to stave off transition difficulty, I appeal to juniors and seniors to serve as an older "buddy" to freshmen who are a bit overwhelmed by high school multiplied by IB demands.  Many of them are eager to serve!  However, when a sign-up list is made available to 9th graders to be mentored, the response is close to non-existent.  Because I am often contacted by parents who are concerned about their child's transition anxieties, I suspect that the freshmen simply don't want to admit vulnerability by signing a publicly circulated list.  Therefore, if a parent or student would like for me to facilitate a student mentor relationship, please let me know via email, phone call, or personal visit.
