The National Merit Scholarship Program honors students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The Pensacola High School IB program produced a record number of National Merit Finalists in 2008: Will Donelan, Lauren Michaels, Wayne Dell, Ren Geryak, Zach Gaidosh, Claire Stubblefield, Travis Hornsby, Alexa Ihns, Michael Fortunati These outstanding students were chosen after a careful evaluation was conducted of their: * Academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; * Scores from two standardized tests * Contributions and leadership in school and community activities * Essay describing interests and goals * Recommmendations written by a high school official Recently, two PHS National Merit Finalists were selected as winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities: -- Zachary S. Gaidosh, Georgia Institute of Technology scholarship, chemical engineering major. -- Alexa Ihns, University of Chicago, English Literature and Biology double major. Officials of each sponsor college selected their scholarship winners from among the15,000 finalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Program. The awards provide $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years. |

The staff of the PHS IB Literary Magazine, winner of 2 All-Florida Awards, has produced yet another outstanding edition of "A Tree Grows In My Mind" ( Volume Five, April 2008). The full color magazine contains excellent poetry, prose, photographs, and original art by PHS IB students. It is easy to see why this publication won the All-Florida Award two years in a row. |
